Cet Mar Aquarium. The Center for Technological Sea Studies and Aqua Culture is an aquarium exhibit that provides an up close look at the ocean life and native species of the inter-tidal zone and the northern gulf coast. Watch sea turtles, stingrays, lobster, dog fish, octopus, sea horses, shrimp, various fish species, and sea lions. You can feed the sea turtles and squid and go in the tank to feed the comical sea lions. CET-MAR is located just before you enter the main guard gate for Las Conchas. Pinacate Biosphere Reserve. Only 52 kilometers northwest of Rocky Point in the Altar Desert is “The Pinacate,” a biosphere reserve with thousand year-old gigantic craters. The Grand Pinacate and Grand Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve is one of the most unique volcanic zones in the world, with moon-like craters over a mile wide, lava tubes, moon-scapes, black pumice soil, cinder cones and sleeping volcanoes. The conservation of these gigantic craters and the surrounding areas are an important part of our ancient history and culture. Pinacate Biosphere Reserve is one of the few archaeological and geological areas in the Southwest that remains mostly untouched by human hands, nature or development. Pinacate's Reserve encompasses over 600 square miles, with 400 cinder cones caused by exploding volcanoes, tunnels, ash and rock scattered for miles. The Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans or CEDO is a natural history resource center and biological field station in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, at the meeting of two marine and desert biosphere reserves - the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Delta Biosphere Reserve and the Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. CEDO is a natural history museum with a giant fin whale skeleton, a field station for researchers and classes, and an education center with a library, laboratories, a book store and gift shop – a true intercultural experience. CEDO promotes conservation and sustainable use of the resources in the upper Gulf of California and Sonoran Desert. For tourists, CEDO is a great resource to introduce you to the unique characteristics of the Sonoran region and the Sea of Cortez. Sandy Beach. Rocky Point’s Sandy Beach - Playa Arenosa - is a beautiful seaside retreat where you can enjoy the sand and surf and many fun water sports, such as swimming, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, water skiing, parasailing, jet skiing, surfing, fishing, clamming, and catching some golden sunshine. Sea of Cortez. With clear waters and abundant sea life, the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) is host to amazing fishing, scuba diving, and beautiful views. Legendary diver Jacques Cousteau described the Sea of Cortez as the "world's aquarium" and the "Galapagos of North America". The Sea of Cortez plays a pivotal role in one of the most interesting ecospheres in the world. The Sea of Cortez is bordered by the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, and Sinaloa. To the north it is part of the desolate Sonoran landscape, and creates amazing areas where desert spills into a beautiful, sparkling coastline. Further south it laps up to Bahia Concepcion, La Paz, San Carlos and San Jose del Cabo. The Sea of Cortez is popular for sport fishing, boating, and scuba diving. Oyster Farms. Visit the Oyster Farms or “Las Ostioneras” just outside Las Conchas to find the freshest oysters in town. The farm is worked by a community of women dedicated to the Sea, to which the name “Las Ostioneras” refers. When visiting, all you need to bring is your favorite hot sauce. They now sell beer, so you are all set for an afternoon snack.Puerto Peñasco Airport (PPE). Located 3 miles from town, Puerto Peñasco Airport is a small local airport catering to light aircraft. The airport has two runways, including a paved 5,000 ft. air strip and gravel road, and has been undergoing upgrades to keep pace with Peñasco’s growing air travel.
